Your decisions take you down a variety of paths that you may or may not intend, but that is what gives this game a successful sense of repeated play change your decision and find out you die on the second day. You must use time management and planning to achieve certain tasks, you must be aware of your actions and how they may impact the future after all, you are trying to reach the upper echelons of the Ministry and hopefully without losing your soul along the way. The controls for the game are easy to learn and it initially feels like it would get boring, but you quickly learn that this is not the case.

When the movie was released in 1984, they gave it the same feel, using cinematography and lighting, and now Warm Lamp Games has done the same with Beholder 2, using minimal colors and silhouettes. When I read 1984, I completely imagined the story in shades of gray, bringing a sense of despair and loss. Through all of this, your goal is to rise within the Ministry by any means possible.īeholder 2 is done in a somewhat minimalistic graphical form where the characters are more silhouettes than fully detailed characters, but this enhances the experience and feel of the game and gives a heightened sense of the dystopian aspects. Along your journey within the story, you are faced with ethical and moral decisions that will drive the action of the game, “Do you send that email or not and what will happen if you do?” At times, Beholder 2 reminded me (and a few others that watched me play) of Paper’s Please, another game based in a totalitarian society, but I feel the intrigue and action within Beholder 2 has taken the experience to a new level. At the same time, you, as Evan, have been hired to start your wonderful and exciting career within the Ministry itself. You play as Evan Redgrave, the son of a former Ministry senior member, and I say “former” because the opening scenes illustrate the untimely departure of Evan’s father.

Oh, yes, you should play this with a healthy paranoia and sense of self-preservation if you hope to succeed. The idea that “The Wise Leader” knows what’s best for all and would “reward” good citizens for their actions brought a wide collection of thoughts to my mind and fueled the growing paranoia that I was developing as I played. Warm Lamp has taken the feel of 1984 and brought it forward into today’s experience. Now, 34 years later, it is 2018 and the idea of a totalitarian dystopian society remains on the minds of creative people and, from the minds of Warm Lamp Games, comes Beholder 2.

In 1984, I entered college and that book was mandatory reading for all entering freshmen as an example of how the future could have been or may be headed, depending on your point of view. In 1948, George Orwell wrote a book describing a dystopian future in which a totalitarian society existed, and Big Brother watched everything. Genre: Adventure, Indie, Simulation, Strategy
